In this talk, Dr. Vasundhara Agrawal reflects on her path from a PhD in chromatin biology and imaging at Northwestern University to a career as a computational scientist in industry. She will discuss how her academic training shaped her approach to problem-solving, how the transition to industry expanded her technical and strategic skillset, and what spatial biology looks like at scale in an industry setting. Trainees who are considering their postdoctoral career path are especially encouraged to bring questions and join the discussion.
About Dr. Vasundhara Agrawal
Vasundhara Agrawal is an Applications Manager for Spatial Biology Image Analysis at Leica Microsystems' Boston Innovation Hub, where she works at the cutting edge of multiplexed whole-tissue imaging, AI-powered image analysis, and spatial statistics. Her work focuses on uncovering molecular signatures across complex biological systems, with particular emphasis on the tumor microenvironment in cancers of diverse origins, as well as neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Vasundhara earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University, specializing in imaging and biophotonics. As a doctoral researcher in the Backman Lab, she worked at the intersection of chromatin biology, biophysics, and imaging, developing methods to study the three-dimensional organization of the genome. Her research integrated chromatin imaging, computational analysis, and physics-based statistical approaches to elucidate genome structure and function, with broader applications in regenerative engineering. Bridging academic innovation and applied science, Vasundhara has spent the past three years translating complex spatial datasets into actionable biological insights, leveraging her interdisciplinary background to drive advanced research and product development in spatial biology. In her free time, Vasundhara enjoys photography, making art, and a daily game of Wordle.
